SIR SAMUEL HOARE, Lord Privy Seal, broadcast to the Empire at 3 p.m. yesterday, and said that if he were asked why the British Empire fought he did not answer as a Minister.
"The answer is not found in Downing Street nor in the
Cabinet rooms of the Dominions.
"The motives which led the people to making the decision are those which spring from the belief that the everlasting values and principles, which we cannot put a price on, are in danger. The possibility of a decent, orderly and happy life in the world is being undermined and destroyed."
We wanted peace but not peace which contained the spreading canker of war nor a peace which meant progressive enslavement, he added.
AIR ATTACKS
It might be queer that the expected air attacks did not come but that sulted us well as with every day postponed we are better able to beat
them.
Speaking of the R.A.F., Sir Samuel Hoare said: "Our young knights of the air are as brave and skilful as any of the happy warriors we ever produced. We realise that the ma- chines good enough for to-day are not up to the needs of to-morrow so we Intend to keep the lead and win and hold command of the air."

LONDON, TO-DAY. BRITAIN'S
BASE NAVAL TRINIDAD HAS BEEN STRONGLY REINFORCED BY THE FORMATION OF A NAVAL VOLUNTEER UNIT WHICH IS NOW WORKING AT FULL STRENGTH.
The Trinidad Naval Volunteers, as the unit is called, was formed with- out any recruiting campaign but in spite of that five times the number of men required applied for enlistment.
The men are drawn from all parts of the colony, from Sangre Grande, Tobago, San Fernando, Barataria and Port of Spain.
Many are yachtsmen and deep sea Ashermen. Some have served in the Navy or the Merchant Marine.
