THE CHINA MAIL, DECEMBER

LARGE-SCALE RED ARMY OFFENSIVE FORESHADOWED

(SPECIAL TO "CHINA MAIL")

Helsinki, To-day.

SECRET SESSION'S

THE BELIEF IS GROWING that the Soviet will short-

ly launch a large offensive on the whole Finnish MEANING

front. The whole of the 9th Soviet Army, which is operat- ing on the Eastern front trying to drive through to the Uleaborg district, aims to cut off Finnish railway communications with Sweden and oc- cupy the shores of the Gulf of Bothnia, which is the Soviet first objective. Meanwhile, since the beginning of the campaign Soviet losses have been five times more than Finnish losses.

A total of 114 Soviet tanks has been disabled.

The morale of the Soviet troops is said to be very low.-Havas.

*.GREAT BATTLE

Helsinki, To-day,

A great battle is still raging on the Eastern Front, where the Finnish counter-attack has succeeded beyond expectations, the recapture of Salla, one of the most important military strongholds, being illustrative of the completeness of the success.

Latest reports indicate that fresh units of the Red Army have been viciously attempting to recover Salla and have suffered severe losses.
