ACTIVITY ON THE WESTERN FRONT

Paris, To-day.

AFTER A SPELL OF comparative calm the western front has suddenly become very active, al- though activity has not yet gone beyond the stage technically known as "strong patrols." The Germans sent out numerous patrols along near- ly the whole of the front on Monday, and these were especially busy east of the Moselle and be tween the Warndt Forest and the Saar.

In the latter region, where German patrols were most numerous, no less than three raids were carried out, ac- companied by the usual artillery.

The fire aimed at demoralising the posts attacked and preventing the ar- cival of reinforcements.

The French artillery replied, their fire hampered the attackers.

LOCAL CLASHES

and

One French patrol withdraw but re- occupied their post at dawn yester- day, so the net German result was mil.

Other posts resisted, and there was heavy local fighting with much hand- grenade throwing.

The French protected their posts with artillery barrages and machine- gun fire, and the Germans were even- tually obliged to retire, leaving many dead on the field.-Reuter.

THREE RAIDS

Paris, To-day.

Three Nazi raids were car- ried out on a French outpost between the Varndt Forest and the Saar, by means of ar- tillery and trench mortar fire.

In the first two atacks, the French outpost maintained its position and repulsed the raiders after violent hand grenade duels lasting for several

hours.
