The Finnish coast was to be blockaded by the Russians as from noon yesterday and foreign ships have been given until noon to-day to leave Finnish waters. after which "these waters will be danger- ous to shipping."

Although the blockade does not officially come into force until to-day, however, the German steamer Oliver was attacked by a Russian submarine near the Aaland Islands on Tuesday. it is now learned.

The submarine fired three shots, hitting her in the bow, after which Soviet sailors boarded the ship to examine her papers. — Reuter.

It is doubted here whether Russians will find it possible to put the blockade into practice, as Finland possesses 1,200 miles of coastline and, with ice on the way, it will be diff-- cult to patrol the seas.

In spite of advice to leave from the Nezi authorities, it is now known that the majority of German residents in Finland have chosen to stay.

Six hundred left a few days ago, but the total number of German residents in Finland is about 4,000. Reuter.
