AUSTRALIA'S EFFORT
OFFER TO BUILD NAVAL CRAFT FOR BRITAIN
Sydney, To-day. IN ADDITION TO THE expansion of Australian naval construction, the Commonwealth Govern- ment has offered to arrange for construction, on behalf of the British Government, if desired. The Premier, Mr. R. G. Menzies, announced that speedy and powerful merchant-ships would be chartered and armed heavily enough to deal with enemy merchant-men and destroyers.
Some of these would be for the
Australian Navy and the others for NAZI BRUTALITY-
the British Admiralty.
Defensive guns were to be mount- ed on 60 merchantmen. The person- nel of the Australian Navy now num- bered 10,000.
Mr. Menzies also announced that a second Australian Imperial Force of 20,000 men, which the Government had decided to raise, would be sent abroad when train- ed, unless circumstances rendered it Impracticable.

In his announcement, Mr. Menzies said that, if the new Neutrality Bill was passed, Australia would buy 50 'planes from America. Furthermore, a number of merchantships had been chartered and armed, for use with the Australian Navy and for the British Admiralty. Three destroyers would be built instead of two, and four more munition factories would be establish- ed.--Reuter.
