ALL QUIET ON THE BORDER: CHINESE RETIRE

AFTER OCCUPYING 'Shumchun Market, and the outskirts of Namtau and Shataukok on Satur- day night, the Chinese forces withdrew yester- day at 3 p.m. and this morning the border was calm and quiet.

*

Last night it was expected that the Chinese would

launch another attack in an attempt to occupy: the whole of Shumchun, but no firing occurred.

It is learned that on Saturday the Chinese filtered in from Lung Kong and Pingwu and carried out simul- taneous attacks on Shumchun, Nam- tau and Shataukok.

The small Japanese outpost at Pokut, a few miles north of the Shumchun Market was the first to be attacked. The Japanese were taken by surprise and 12 soldiers, including two officers, were killed.

The Chinese then advanced to the Market and after sharp street-fighting the Japanese retreated southwards to the British border at noon yesterday, GEISHA GIRLS

Twelve Japanese geisha girls took refuge among the Chinese villagers after fleeing from the Hung On Hotel in Shumchun Market..

Another Chinese unit proceeded to -a point between Namtau and Shum- -chun and severed communications be-

tween the two towns. -

At Namtau, the Chinese failed to gain entry into town but were on the outskirts until yesterday afternoon. Two Japanese warships were off Namtau but did not attempt to shell.

ARMED SHIPS

London, To-day.

The legality of the German intention to treat armed Bri- tish merchant-ships as war-| ships is questioned in Lon- don.

The leading text-book on interna- tional law, by Oppenheim, says that the enemy, can only attack merchant- ships if they refuse to stop, after be ing called on to do so.

Oppenheim says that defonsive armament on merchantmen," Buch as that now supplied to British ships, in no way alters their legal status.

If merchant-ships expect an attack from enemy warships they need not wait to be attacked before themselves opening fire. — Reuter.
