GERMAN PLANE SHOT DOWN IN THAMES AREA

Shanghai, To-day. WHILE THE AIR-RAID SIGNALS were definitely sounded in London yesterday morning, and the streets of the capital were cleared, there seems to be some doubt as to whether or not there was, in actual fact, an actual attempt by the Nazis to stage a bombing raid over England. Reuter reports being officially informed that as far as the East Coast was concerned, reconnaissance 'planes appeared and were driven off by R.A.F. machines which, on their return, were fired on by our coastal batteries by mistake.
At the same time, there are cir- cumstantial eye-witness accounts of German air raids over the Medway and Thames Estuary districts.
Eye-witnesses, in or near London itself, for instance, stated 'that they saw an anti-aircraft shell burst near the tail of what appeared to be a German bomber.
The latter, fatally hit, dived straight down and into the ground, these eye-witnesses claim.
