STREAMLINED
Back And Shoulders
By DONALD LOOMIS
The exercise for which Jean Chat- burn posed above strengthens the back and corrects round shoulders. It will also reduce large hips and give you that streamlined figure.
To do this, lie face down on the floor, clasp your hands behind you; stretching your arms as far down as they will go. Put your feet under a low rung of a heavy chair or a piece of furniture that will hold them down, unless you have a partner who can hold them for you; then raise head and shoulders off the ground.
Vary this exercise by raising both head and feet off the ground at the same time.
Ninety per cent. of our modern girls have round shoulders. I do not know if this is because so many girls sit at office desks or typewriters in a poor light so that they have to bend over at their work, or because they do not take the trouble to straighten up, but the effect is most unattractive.
Norma Shearer has one of the prettiest backs on the screen. She is very conscientious, and no one ever has to tell her to come in when she needs any special work. She is a great swimmer at one time she won a championship medal as the best swimmer in her class” -→→ and since she lives most of the year at the beach, she seldom lets a day pass without a swim.
Swimming gives her long lovely muscles instead of ugly knotty ones
After an illness, or a long, perlod of work when she has had no time: for exercise, she comes in for from four to six weeks of concentrated work.

Thus, in the first exercise given above, you inhale as you raise your head and shoulders, and exhale as you lower them.
Here is an exercise for a lovely back which you may find a bit diff- cult at first:

To correct swayback, sit on a large firm cushion with feet outstretched on the floor; lean backward as far as extended you can go; you will feed the pull together; along the muscles of the spine.
