There is, of course, also the political aspect, but Byrd doesn't like to dis- cuss this. But Germany's claims and plans in the Antarctic have a lot to do.with this expedition.*

Who will finally own the 5,500,000 frozen miles of Antarctica it's impos- sible to know at this stage. Perhaps it will be shared out. Perhaps it will be ultimately found not to be worth ownership. But Byrd believes in its value and its importance, and he is going put to plant the Stars and Stripes firmly in this waste land where no woman has ever been.

He is the right man to do it.
