WHITE MAN'S PRESTIGE
Johannesburg, To-day. Referring to the international situation in a speech here, Mr. Oswald Pirow, the Minister of De- fence (who recently toured Europe), said that he did not believe that war in Europe was in- evitable.
He added, however, that nothing had happened which directly or indirectly affected the vital interests of South Africa, but that personally he felt the position in the Far East could not be regarded with the same comparative equani- mity.
WHOOPEE HOSTESS "A KILLER"
Two crazy American parties One ended with policemen grabbing the hostess to take her to the mur- der cells of a goal. The other end- ed with a nude girl dancing inches from death on a five-storey para- pet.
The party which the police broke up was at Dallas (Texas). As the the hostess, in pyjamas, laughed and waved a wine glass, one of her guests recognised her as an escaped murderess.
He declared that the white man's prestige in the East had already sunk to zero and that unless it was rehabilitated in the Pacific it would eventually sink to the same level in the countries of the Indian Ocean.
"When that happens, we have to face the possibility of repercussions in Africa," he continued, "which is as ob- vious as they may be dis. astrous.
"The pity of it is that the nations of Europe are so blind with hatred for each other that they forget that the white man's prestige is not the prestige of any particular nation but that of the whole white race." -Reuter.

night, an employee of the King's Theatre lost his footing and drop- ped from a height of about 15, feet.
A month ago she broke out of gaol. She left a letter saying: "I'm going to have my last fling."
She had hitch-hiked to Dallas. And in the party's whirl of wine and gaiety she proceeded to keep her word.
As she raised her glass a woman guest recalled some newspaper pic- tures of the notorious Velma.
She slipped out, told the police. A few minutes later Velma was on her way back to gaol with a police escort.
She boasted: "Well, I had that fling. Now I'm content to spend the rest of my life in a cell.”

"DANCING ON A RAINBOW”
The party, which had a girl's edge-of-death dance as finale, was in Times-square, New York,
Slipping away from the celebra- tion of her husband's birthday, beautiful Dorothy Louis, aged twenty-seven, climbed to the roof- top, tore off every stitch of her clothing.
Hundreds watched, catching their
breath, as she climbed up on to a ledge and screamed. "Yoo hoo,- everybody!"
The crowds gasped as she began to dance along the maranet singing “I'm Walking on a Rainbow.”
Every now and then she sat down, dangled her feet over the edge and blew kisses.
Police crawled stallthily over the TÖOfA CARYying a rug. They- afraid that the girl might herself into the road five down.
When they reached her, they flung the rug over her, dragged her to safety.
