GANGSTERS BEGIN NEW TERROR IN SHOOTING DOWN STATE WITNESSES
New York, July 28.
A car drew close to the curb, slowed up for & few moments, revolver shots barked through the din of traffic. A pedestrian fell to the pavement, riddled with bullets. The car picked up speed, dodged among other cars and was lost in the heavy traffic.
New York police authorities last night were busy investigating this street murder, which occurred earlier in the day, the latest of a series of eight such killings. The series began some six months ago, when the New York District At- torney, Mr. Thomas A. Dewey, be- gan his new purge of New York's gangsterland.
Threatened gunmen carry out the murderers, shooting down persons who are potential witnesses against them or who were former accom- plices in crime but are now turning State evidence.
In six months, the State lost
seven
innocent pedestrian, who was mow- ed down by a hail of bullets when mistaken for a witness.
The authorities are clamping donw with precautionary measures- to safeguard their witnesses. The witness for whom yesterday's victim was taken by error, is now guarded by three detectives.
Believed to be responsible for these outrages is gang-leader known under, the name of Lepke. He is the object of an intensive search by the police, who have spread a wide network to catch him.
Lepke is sought by the authorities for two years now, and the G-Men have been called in to help in the search for the bold gangster and his ́ band of killers. Their methods are reminiscent of the tactics employed by Al Capone, former Chicago gangland chief, in his heyday, when he used to dispose of unwanted per.. sons by street executions.--Havas.
