World's Aid To Jewish Refugees

London, To-day.

Lord Winterton, for the Government, stated in the House of Commons yesterday that consider- able progress had been made by the London inter-governmental committee on refugees.

Progress had been made especially during the last few months, and the number of refugees who had left Germany since the Evian committee was formed a year ago was 150,000--a figure which he regarded as satisfactory.

The United States annually took, San Domingo appeared to offer a quota of 27,000 refugees, while the wide opportunities. actual intake was larger because of A report from the the number of temporary tourists allowed to remain.

Probably the total number in the' United States was 40,000.

There were 40,000 German re- fugees in Britain at the present time, and he thought that was suf- ficient answer to the charge that the British Government was doing nothing.

EMPIRE AID

The British Colonial Empire, ex- cluding Palestine and Trans-Jordan, had absorbed 1,700 persons in the six months ended March 31 last.

Australia was taking 5,000 a year for three years and Brazil 11,000. The latter country was prepared to take up to 8,000 more.

Referring to the schemes for large-scale settlement, Lord Winter- ton said that the British Guiana scheme would begin this autumn.
