Baby Engine May Revolutionise British

Inventor's Success After 30 Years
A baby turbine engine which may revolutionise the British shipping and shipbuilding industry has been invented by a Glasgow engineer.

The Army has lost a machine-gun. A number of the Bren type were loaded on to a lorry at the Tower and taken to Folkestone for use in manoeuvres.

MYSTERY DEATH
Home Office experts will attend the inquest of Henry Morris (87), of Putney, who has died in a Fulham Hospital from a rare disease,

Mr. Morris died after an illness in-woute taken by the lorry, which

The machine, which is the result of 30 years' experimenting by Mr. James MacLeod, will augurate a new system of marine propulsion.
It is claimed that the invention will effect 30 per cent. Saving in fuel, a 50 per cent, saving in engine- roomspace, and a saving of several hundreds per cent. in weight.
In his office in Bath-street, Glas- gow, Mr. MacLeod told a reporter something of his invention and the work which led up to it.
"My new geared turbine unit is really the culmination of a life- time's work," he said, "and I am glad the-work-has-ended, happily.
"Chief features of the system are high efficiency, light weight, small size, and ease in manipulation.
SUCCESSFUL TESTS
"Every one of these factors is of paramount importance to shipping. A fortnight ago, tests under the most rigid conditions were success- fully carried through by the British Corporation on' an experimental unit, which I built for inspection under their survey in Birmingham.
"These tests were attended by reports and distinguished marine propulsion authorities from all over Britain. They were entirely successful.”
Mr. MacLeod described how the idea for his latest invention first occurred to him when he was work- ing in collaboration with the late Sir Hugh Reid, Bart., the noted Scottish engineer who pioneered the evolution of turbine locomotive,
"From that day," added Mr. Mac- Leod, "I have worked steadily on my idea until I am confident that I have now perfected it.
"As an example of what it means to shipping, I quote the actual case of the experimental unit tested in: Birmingham.
BIG ADVANTAGES
"That unit developed 2,500 shaft horse-power, yet in its completed condition it weighed only 28 tons required for a modern reciprocating unit developing exactly the same power.
"In size, my engine measures only fourteen feet high, and could be in- stalled in an engine room of seven- teen feet six inches in length." A present-day propulsion unit deve- loping the same power would mea-" sure 24 feet in height, and would- require an engine room of at least 31 feet in length.
"Another big advantage is the ease with which it can be mano- euvred. During the Birmingham tests, it was conclusively proved that the time taken to reverse the unit from full speed ahead to full speed astern and vice versa was only ten seconds.
“Most Important claim of that of economy, and I have shown that by use of my unit gaving 30 per cent. in fuel are possible. ."Furthermore, the unit cada
