WANG KEH-MIN GIVES JAPAN A JOLT: COLD SHOULDER TO FEDERATION
Peiping, To-day.
Japanese press correspondents received a jolt when Wang Keh-min, head of the Peiping "pro- visional government," voiced opposition to the scheme for a “federal government” in Japan- ese-occupied China.
Wang Keh-min had just returned to Peiping from Tsingtao, where he attended the "united coun- cil" meeting.
Receiving foreign, Chinese and Japanese journalists, he declared that the suggested new “govern- ment" was not even discussed at Tsingtao, and denied that Wang Ching-wei, former Kuomintang lea- der, attended the meeting.

He added it was improbable that the council would' discuss the sub- ject at its next meeting in August. NO STATEMENT Replying to a barrage of ques- tions from startled Japanese respondents, Wang Keh-min still further discouragement, de- claring that his "government” had prepared no statement either sup porting or answering Wang Ching- wei's recent manifestos and peace appeals.
Public reaction in North China to Wang Ching-wei's statements shows a wide difference of opinion, some favouring and others criticis ing Wang Ching-wei,
While the "provisional govern- ment" agreed with Wang Ching- wei in wishing the end of the war, they differed on details and thods, he added.-Reuter.
