Sir Robert Craigie (our Ambassador in Tokyo) is continuing his efforts to obtain the release of Lt.-Col. Spear, British military attache in China who is being held by the Japanese at Kalgan on a charge of espionage.
Mr. R. A. Butler, made this statement in the House
of Commons at question time yesterday. Mr. Arthur Henderson (Labour) asked if it was not quite contrary to the accepted rules in re- gard to diplomatic immunity that this British military attache should even be held in arrest by the Japanese.
Mr. Butler was understood to reply: I think in general that may be the case.
