· BRITISH YANGTSE GUNBOAT ANNOYS JAPANESE ARMY

Tokyo, To-day. A vigorous protest has been lodged with the British naval authorities at Shanghai against the al- leged action of the British river gunboat H.M.S. Scarab "in forcibly landing about 150 cases of goods at Wuhu, on the Yangtse." According to Japanese military headquarters at Nanking, Scarab "intimidated" Japanese offi- cers and men by pointing machineguns at them!

An apology and guarantees against similar inci-

dents in future is demanded!

PACT TALKS: FAR EAST A SNAG?

LONDON, TO-DAY.

THE PRIME MINISTER STAT- ED IN THE HOUSE OF COM- MONS YESTERDAY THAT THE ANGLO-SOVIET DISCUSSIONS AT MOSCOW WERE STILL PRÓ- CEEDING.

Last Thursday afternoon the French and British Ambassadors, accompanied by Mr. Strang, had. been received by Mr. Molotov, to whom Sir William Seeds had ex- plained the latest Anglo-French proposals.

A further meeting had taken place on Friday afternoon, when M. Molotov communicated to the French and British representatives certain observations of the Soviet Government on these proposals.

Mr. Chamberlain indicated in a supplementary answer that out- standing differences were not con- fined to the question of the posi- tion of the Baltic States.

He was also asked if instructions to Sir William Seeds were wide enough to obviate reference back to London, and replied: "I think that must be determined by how the discussions proceed. It may be that further fresh points may be raised requiring reference back but I am not aware of any." British Wireless.

The protest declares that H.M.S. Scarab violated the undertaking given by the British naval authori- ties on June 3 that an itemised list of goods would be submitted to the Japanese before goods were landed at Yangtse ports.

a

The protest denies a claim which is said to have been put forward by the commander of Scarab that list of goods was submitted to Japanese army lieutenant.-Reuter. SECOND ATTEMPT

Shanghai, To-day. The goods are alleged to have been landed from H.M.S. Scarab on June 14.

The Japanese also state that the same gunboat tried to land cargo, at Wuhu on June 6 but abandoned the attempt when the Japanese mili- tary authorities interfered.

The Japanese allegation reveals for the first time the 'existence of an agreement between the Japanese and British authorities. Trans- Ocean.
