SOLDIERS APPEAR IN KOWLOON

COURT

Four British soldiers who were arrested late on Saturday night in connection with a robbery at 14, :Shumchun Street, appeared before Mr. E. Himsworth in the Kowloon Magistracy this morning, charged with posing as police officers and larceny, and, in the case of one of them, with common assault.

They are:-

Stephen Vincent Ward, 27, "C" Company, Middlesex Regiment;

Arthur David Smith, 21, of “A” -Company, Middlesex Regiment;

Alfred Jenkins, 21, of Head- quarters Company, Middlesex Regi- ment; and

Louis Remer, 22, of Head- -quarters Company, Middlesex Regi-

ment.

They are charged with taking the "designation or character of police officers to enter the premises,” and with the larceny of $55.40 from Kwok Chan, 2k, shop foki; Cheng Kam, 36, licenced hawker; Tsui Fat, 42, P.W.D. coolie; and Wan -Sing, 45, shipping company coolie.

Ward is also charged with com- mon assault on Tsui Fat.

Mr. Himsworth read the charges out to them without en- tering any plea. The case was then adjourned for one week, the de- fendants being released on person- al sureties of $50 each.

ANGLO-FRENCH CO-OPERATION ON COLONIES

Paris, To-day.

Closer French and British colonial .co-operation was the subject of a long talk between the British Colonics Secretary, Mr. Malcolm Macdonald, and the French Co- lonial Minister, M. Georges Mandel, here yesterday.

It is understood the statesmen reviewed various economic and military problems affecting the two Empires.

These included raw materials and steps to be taken if necessary to ensure close military co-opera- tion.

- Mr. Macdonald flew from Geneva to Paris to attend a luncheon with M. Mandel, Reuter.

British Wireless adds that veral French Cabinet Ministers .and General Gamelin, French Chief of Staff, were present at the luncheon. Mr. Macdonald returned to Geneva last evening.
