PASTOR AND WIFE FACE INDECENCY CHARGES : NUDE ORGIES ALLEGED

Los Angeles, May 16. His flock rallied to the support of the Rev. Joe Jeffers, young pastor of the Kingdom Church, who must stand trial with his pretty wife, Zella Joy, on a morals charge growing out of alleged "orgies" in their home.

Mr. Higgins said neither he nor Miss Morgan had removed their clothes.

Both dictaphone and motion picture records were made of the scene, Mr. Higgins said. They were not brought into the hearing but are expected to be used at the trial.

They prayed, sanghymns, read psalms, occasionallý" rolled on the floor, and marched about the hall of justice carrying a banner which read:

"In America we trust in God, but the Assistant District Attorney says to Hell with God."

HEARING IN CAMERA

The hearing was closed to both press and public at the preacher's request. Only two witnesses were called. Miss Marquerite Morgan, a red-haired beauty shop operator, said the Jeffers invited her to din- ner at their apartment on swank Wilshire Boulevard last March 9.

"When I arrived,” she said, “Mrs. Jeffers was naked. Dr. Jeffers sug- gested that we have a few drinks. We drank some champagne."

Then, she said, Dr. Jeffers brought out a "little red book” of animated pictures.

"WENT INTO BEDROOM”

"We looked at it," she continued, "and then all three of us went into the bedroom and Dr. Jeffers took off his clothes.”

She said she had not taken part in what followed, but that she had spent the night, sleeping alone in one of the twin beds.

Dr. Jeffers is a former Baptist minister who came here from Texas several years ago and set up

his own church in a small frame building.

The Prosecutor, Mr. Ernst Roll charged that he had been COR- demning Jews and Catholics from his pulpit and had once declared that "if we killed 25 of our leading Jews, we would be able to get back control of our money system.”

Mr. Roll said that he had, been "praying for the deaths of certain Deputy District Attorneys."

Rev. Jeffers denied he was anti- Semitic or anti-Catholic.

NERVE HAVOC

DUE TO SCARE PLACARDS

Sir George Broadbridge, Con- servative M.P. for the City of London, defending his recent question in the House of Commons on the subject of Press censorship, said that doctors had written to him testifying to the alarming in- crease in nervous cases among their patients was a result of the "scare" tactics of some news- papers.

She returned to the apartment 10 days later and this time was introduced to Vincent Casey, who later turned out to be Vincent Higgins, a District Attorney's in- Sir George, who was speaking at vestigator. The Jeffers disrobed again and were repeating their pher York, Conservative M.P. for the 1912 Club, where Mr. Christo- previous, performance, she said, Ripon, lectured on "Food Supplies,” when Mr. Higgins suddenly shout-quoted instances of what he des- ed, "Mahatma Ghandi! It was a signal to other inves- tigators waiting outside.

Four or five men burst into the room. One of them aimed a motion picture camera at the Reverend and Mrs. Jeffers," Miss Morgan testified.

Sir George said he had the greatest admiration for the Press as a whole, but the fact remained that this habit had grown to an alarming degree recently.
