S'HAI CHINESE WARNED TO BOYCOTT JAPAN

Chungking, To-day.

Chinese merchants in Shang- hai have been warned against selling Japanese goods, accord- ing to a Shanghai report.

On Monday, two Chinese youths threw a bomb into a cot- ton piece goods store at Rue de Montigny in French Concession, which was alleged to be selling Chinese Japanese goods with

trade marks. It failed to ex- plode. They also left a threaten- ing letter.

Shortly afterwards, handbills warning Chinese merchants marketing Japanese products were scattered in the street from the roof garden of the Great World Amusement Cen- tre.--Central News.

The cause of this is stated to be the threat to Canton by the Chin- ese forces, who are advancing from three directions.

Some 50 persons attempting to "smuggle" out of Canton by sam- pan were caught and shot, accord- ing to reliable reports from some who had managed to reach Macao safely having landed on the east coast of Chung Shan and hiked to Macao.

Tension is said to be running high among the Chinese population in the former Kwangtung capital.

TRANSFERS FROM HAINAN

Japanese troops are being trans- ferred from Hainan Island to Can- ton, but are immediately sent out to the front after their arrival. Only a handful of Japanese soldiers remain in the city, and as a result robberies are on the increase even in broad daylight.

It is believed that the Japanese will soon have to give up further ground to shorten their defence lines. Our Own Correspondent,
