Berlin Reticence On Gafencu Visit Results

Von Ribbentrop Gets Another Disappointment

Berlin, To-day.

It is evident from the official reticence concerning the concrete results of the conversations be- tween von Ribbentrop and the Rumanian For- eign Minister, M. Gafencu, that the German Foreign Office is unable to proclaim a German diplomatic victory.

This is von Ribbentrop's second severe disappoint- ment this week, for it is known that he exert- ed strong pressure in an effort to provide Herr Hitler with a birthday present in the form of the return of Danzig to Germany.

-ROOSEVELT DISCUSSES FAR EAST

Washington, To-day. The Chinese Ambassador interviewed President Roose- velt yesterday morning.

The Ambassador later in- timated that the Far Eastern situation generally was dis- cussed. Reuter.

M. Gafencu had talks yesterday with both von Ribbentrop and Herr Hitler.

In the afternoon, they were en- gaged for several hours and as no official information is forthcoming, it is believed that von Ribbentrop secured nothing more than an un- dertaking to carry out the recent Rumanian-German economic agree-

ment.

Trans-Ocean says however, quot- ing "well-informed quarters,” that M. Gafencu gave an assurance that Rumania would not participate in "attempted encirclement" of Ger- man and would not transform the British guarantee into a mutual as- sistance pact or the Polish-Ruman- ian defensive pact into a general al- liance.

M. Gafencu is proceeding to Lon. don to-day via Brussels.
