Sir Robert Hodgson has been overtaken by events. He abandoned his vacation to return to Spain armed with full powers to conduct ar- rangements for a truce and to give what stipulations might be required of the British Government.

Britain's "aim was to secure terms from General Franco which the Republicans could accept with guarantees of performance given by Britain and France.

CONFIDENCE IN LOYALIST GOVERNMENT

Paris, Yesterday. Political and syndicalist or- ganisations in Central Spain have expressed confidence in the Republican Government and have declared their willingness; · to continue to fight, says a mes-. sage from Valencia.

An appeal is to be sent out to members of these organisations exhorting them to resist to the utmost all forms of "foreign op- pression."

It is also reported that Nicolas. Domingo, the Republican anti-spy chief, has arrived in Muroïa from Catalonia.

A Vickers Supermarine Spitfire fighter aircraft, of the type used by the R.A.F., recently flew from Le Bourget to Croydon in 41. minutes.
