THE DAILY SHORT STORY
Summer Camp
Cary's fears that Sydna might not like the camp on Eagle Lake were dissipated when he saw her expres sion.
She was a city-bred girl and had never displayed more than a casual interest in country people or country environment.
"It's heavenly, Cary! Oh, we're going to love it here!"
The anxious expression left Cary's face. He took his wife into his arms. "Darling, if you knew how good that makes me feel. Remember when I came home last week and told you I'd located a cute place up on Eagle Lake, and I wanted you to see. it? I tried not to appear overly en- thusiastic. I wanted you to decide for yourself. Well, this is the camp and you do like it, and boy, am glad!"
"Look," he said one evening when they were sitting before a roaring fire with the wind howling about the eaves, "what do you say we stay up here all winter?". He got up and crossed to the door, placing his hand over the crack, between Jamb and panel. "We could tack some weather- stripping on here to shut off this draft. Weather strip the windows, too. Buy a couple of oil heaters. With them and the fireplace we'd be snugds could be."
Sydna' closed her finger on the book she had been reading. "What about the "water freezing?"
"I've thought of that, too. We could disconnect the electric system and put. in a hand pump. Drain it nights, prime: it mornings. That way she wouldn't freeze and we could get along. Boy, would it be swell?"
"Well, then, let's try it."
So they bought the camp. and moved their things up the next week.
