Canton is still a dead city, and the claims of Jap- anese spokesmen that the inhabitants are re- turning in a steady stream are misleading. On the surface, it appears that the population of the Kwangtung capital is now much larger than it was after the panic evacuation in October last.
Actually, however, the Chinese seen in the city, computed by some quarters as high as 100,000, are mostly from villages and small towns in the neighbourhood who come to Canton for a day or two to obtain food.
Supplies for miles around were seized by the Japanese some time ago, and in many villages a state of privation is being experienced.
