TOKYO 'PEACE' FEELER

Chungking, To-day.

DARING HOLD-UP Japan's "peace" terms, contained in the statement NORTH CHINA

OF FOREIGNERS IN SHANGHAI

Shanghai, To-day. Vividly illustrating the extent to which armed crime has increased on the Western boundaries of the International Settlement

on the fringe of the Japanese-controlled areas in recent weeks, there occur red yesterday the most daring hold-up, almost unprecedented in the history of Shanghai.`

A line of seven cars, contain- ing a party of about fifteen American and British men and women, was halted near the Co-1 lumbia Country Club, an Ameri- can institution within the Settle- band of ment, perimeter, by a about eight armed bandits flour- ishing pistols who had parked

their own car across the road.

The foreign party was forced to dismount and was relieved of watches, rings and wallets to a value of approximately one thou- sand Chinese dollars.

The gang, who are reported to have been well-dressed, made a clean escape, and despite the early arrival of the Settlement police, none have been appre- hended.

THREE BRITONS

The party is known to have in- cluded at least three Britons, Messrs. J. H. Ford and Innes, both of the Asiatic Petroleum Company, and Mrs. Innes, and two prominent Americans, Dr. T. B. Dunn and Dr. D. J. Collins. ·

Although hold-ups of Chinese are a daily occurrence,. yesterday's case involving foreigners is the first of this kind for many years. →→→→→Reuter.

Special attention was also directed to the demand for the granting of the right of domicile in all parts of China for Japanese. General Chiang Kai-shek point- ed out that these terms

were

more extensive and more stiff than those presented to China before the outbreak of hostili- ties.

He added: "If the earlier terms, were unacceptable to China, h can the country, after eighteen months' fighting and suffering, accept the present demands.
