CHAMBERLAIN ASKED TO MEDIATE IN ROME? Franco-British Conversations In Paris
Interest In British Visit To Rome Enhanced
London, To-day.
Interest in Mr. Chamberlain's forthcoming visit to Rome increases with the approach of the time and has been enhanced by the French reply to the Italian note denouncing the Franco-Italian agreement of 1935.
It is generally assumed that the conversations held during the past few days by the French For- eign Minister, M. Bonnet, with the British Am- bassador, Sir Eric Phipps, as well as with the French Ambassador in London, M. Corbin, were mainly concerned with the question of Djibouti and Tunis.
Press reports here that owing to the urgency of the Tunisian pro- blem, M. Corbin had already left Paris for London, are' stated by the French Embassy to be incorrect, but it is regarded as certain that M. Corbin will see Lord Halifax on the subject early in the New Year.
