Make-up is powerful enough to transform Bette Davis from this flower-like loveliness on the left, to the haggard wench at the right.

Falling Hair & Dandruff Checked
HERE are so many theories
THE
on when to shampoo, your hair, how often and what with, that it is not surprising mapy women and girls are confused.
To-day I will limit my advice to those of you who are troubled with oily hair; dandruff or fall- ing hair. The same treatment does for all three scalp condi- tions and if you have oné ail ment you are likely to have the other two!
Dandruff is scalp cuticle. Some claim it is the excessive glands. activity of the oil Others that it is a drying scalp.. But all agree that vigorous scalp massage, hair brushing and pulling is required to banish it. It seems that local circulation is lacking so you must bring the blood to the scalp through finger-tip cales- thenics, and sound brushing with a deep, stiff bristled brush,
In shampooing your hair never use hot water. For a stubborn case of dandruff wash your hair once a week with tinc- ture of green soap (which you buy in liquid form at a drug- store for a few cents). Do not use this if you have dyed your hair it might turn the colour. Castile is safest for dyed tresses.
Apply the tincture of green soap to the scalp with a soft brush and rub it into the scalp. Rinse several times with warm last rinsing water and the should be cold water. Plenty of cold water is good for an oily scalp.
Falling hair is practically al- ways associated with dandruff, although continued poor health, or blood which is anaemic may The general be responsible. stimulating through scalp mas- sage and daily brushing is of greatest value but persons, with falling hair, should most cer- tainly have their blood count checked. Perhaps a change of diet, or a blood tonic is needed.

Where there is falling hair without much dandruff, a tri- weekly treatment of hot and cold rinsings with water (no soap used) is excellent, Hot water, then cold water, hot water again, then cold.
There are, of course, splendid commercial tonics and oint- ments for these specific scalp conditions. If you buy one, select a solution which is manu- factured by one of the leading they should scalp chemists.. know more about treatment of the scalps as that is their specialty. If you can put your thead in expert hands for recon- ditioning, by all means do so.
Shoes are formulating platforms too, in this year of electioйoering. Here is a shoe with a conservative platform in contracting leather to give the effect but not the heighth of the platform sole. After all, if you are over five foot six, why go higher?

YOUR DANCE SHOES
AVENING shoes of tinsel and.
Ebrocade are liable to tarnish
very quickly, but if treated in the following way, they will take on a new lease of life. Grate some fine white bread through a sieve, then mix some powder blue into it, allowing about one part of the blue to three parts of breadcrumbs.
Sprinkle the mixture over the shoes, rubbing quickly with a piece of flannel. Shake out the powder, removing all particles with a soft brush, then finish the polishing with a piece of velvet. These shoes should be wrapped in dark blue or black tissue-paper, and kept in an air- tight box.
SATIN SHOES
Satin or crepe-de-Chine even- ing shoes can be kept fresh much longer if they are rubbed over with a clean rag dipped in benzine each time they have been worn. When they do need cleaning, the best way of doing this is with spirits of wine,
Pour some into a saucer, dip a pad of cotton-wool into it, and then
rub thoroughly into the shoe with a circular motion, paying particular attention to any marks on the heels and toes. When the pad is soiled, change it for a fresh one, and continue until the shoes are quite clean, then put them on one side for a day or two to air thoroughly be- fore wearing them..
If they are strained and soil- ed beyond cleaning, they can be dyed with spirit dye, which can be bought in any colour. The shoes must first be washed as clean as possible with warm water and soap, then dried. The stain can then be applied with a quick circular motion to avoid streakiness.
