Kinder Not
To Tell? What The Stars
\IRCUMSTANCES alter cases,
run it is really lack of morat courage that deludes you into believing that, in silence, lies kindness.
"Of course, she knows nothing about it-it's much kinder not to tell her??. -
How often have you said that? Said it, of course, with the very best of intentions; hoping, pro- bably, to spare someone near and dear to you the pain of hear, ing bad news.
But have you ever paused to consider whether, in taking up this attitude, you weren't simply avoiding an unpleasant duty, and so exposing a beloved one to the worse pain of hearing the bad news from a stranger. For someone else may so easily "let the cat out of the bag," giving the recipient of the story or whatever it may be, a shock, and leaving them with a quite-under standable grievance against you for not having forewarned them
MUCH KINDER
You wouldn't of course, dream of repeating any ill-natured gossip you might chance to hear about one of your friends. But do you ever stop to think that · if the gossip is really damaging it might be your duty to tell your friend about it? For, if all her friends adopt the "don't tell her" attitude, the story · may spread far and wide before she hears the slightest whisper of it. And, even though the office of tale-bearer provés a thank- less one, any worth-while friend will, on reflection, realise that you have shown considerable moral courage in coming to her. But surely it isn't "kinder not to tell" an invalid or the victim of an accident that she is incur- able? Awful as it is to have to reveal to one you love that she will be permanently lamed or bed-ridden, it is much kinder in the long run than allowing her to drag on through long weeks and months of hope de- ferred, growing gradually more .weary and discouraged, until she finally discovers the truth- as she inevitably will-when she may be too embittered to "face" up to it.
TELL THE TRUTH
So do tell her the truth--as soon as the doctor will let you— and then help her to re-organise her life to meet the new circum- stances.
And what of the dying, should they know the truth? Well, that is a very difficult question→→ per~- haps too difficult for anyone but a doctor to answer. But my own feeling is that anyone facing the greatest adventure of all has a right to know.
Most common of all these "kinder not to tell" situations is the case of the husband who's having a flirtation with another woman,

Don't you think it would be much wiser and better to wBEN her now, in a straightforward, friendly way?Armed with a ̈ knowledge of the situation she'll be able to tackle it in her own way to face the world.
