Remarkable Scenes On Return From Germany.

ON THE KNEES OF THE GODS

--Lord Runciman

London, To-day.

A letter in His Majesty's own handwriting was handed to Mr. Neville Chamberlain as soon as he stepped from the plane at Heston aerodrome yesterday on his return from Berchtesgaden. Thousands of people in Whitehall cheered Mr. Chamberlain's return at 6.20 p.m., and extra police contingents prevented enthusiasts from breaking through into Downing Street, access to which was restricted to journalists and photographers.

Mrs. Chamberlain was waiting on the doorstep of No. 10, and was the first to greet her husband. The couple stood arm in arm, smiling for the benefit of photographers.

Waiting inside were Sir John Si-

mon (Chancellor of the Exchequer), BIG INFLUX

Sir Samuel Hoare (Home Secre-

tary), Sir Robert Vansittart (Chief OF JAPANESE

Diplomatic Adviser), and Sir Alex-

anner Cadogan (Permament Under- INTO P.I.
