Advance Of Several Miles In New Offensive

Japanese Centre
North Of Pihsien
Hankow, To-day. An advance of several miles is claimed by the Chin- ese following the launching of the general offensive in south Shantung yesterday morn- ing. The Chinese delivered smashing attacks through the centre of the Japanese line north of Pih- sien and east of Taierchwang.
A telephone message from the front states that the Chinese occupied Taliangpi and Siaolingpi, two villages west of Szehucheng, adding that the Japanese forces are retreating northward.
The general offensive heraldsĮ the commencement of the decisive stage in the Shantung battle, ac- cording to the opinion of compe- tent observers, who have long expected that the Chinese forces, totalling 800,000 men, would
launch a crushing attack as soon as they found signs that the Jap- anese offensive was spent.
Following the arrival of 2,000 the Japanese reinforcements, Chinese communique states, the Japanese north-east of Taier- chwang are launching attacks in the vicinity of Hsin Lungshi and Chinese Yingchwang, but the lines are hitherto intact.
WEST SHANTUNG The Chinese Command is watching closely the movements of Japanese troops in west Shan- tung, where reinforcements are being rushed to Tsining and Nan- yangcheng in preparation for a drive on Kinghsiang, and, even- tually, Kweiteh.
