FUTURE OF PROTECTORATES
London, To-day
A statement on the present phase of the negotia- tions between the British Government and the South African Union regarding the future of the native protectorates of Nyasaland, Be chuanaland and Basutoland, was made by Mr. Malcolm Macdonald, Dominions Secretary, in the House of Commons yesterday.
-The British Government, he said. concurs with the South African Government în "regarding transfer of these territories as the final goal, but still believes that this transfer should not take place un- til the wishes of the natives have been considered, or before the Bri- tish Parliament has been given an opportunity to express its view.
Under these circumstances, the South African Premier, General Hertzog had co-operated with him in seeking the best practica? solution.
It had been decided to establish a permament advisory committee composed of three representatives of the South African Union and the three resident commissioners in the protectora Trans-Ocean.
