BERLIN

AND UNOFFICIALNO

London, To-day.

The Lord President of the Council, Lord Hali- fax, will leave London for Berlin this afternoon."

Although the visit is entirely private and un- official, Herr Hitler has intimated, after enquiry, that he will be glad to see Lord Halifax during the visit and the invitation has been accepted.

Conversations between Lord Half-

fax and the Fuehrer will be purely exploratory in character. Informa tion regarding the arrangements for the visit, which were in train be- fore the Foreign Secretary left Lon- don last week, was communicated by him to the French Minister, M. Delbos, while in the Belgian capital.

MORE RESERVE

A general tone of something ap- proaching reserve is maintained by the British press on the visit Germany of Lord Halifax, following the outspoken comment of the Nazi news agency.

The papers say that Mr. Neville. Chamberlain is anxious to have the visit take place, and attribute great importance to the Chamberlain- Eden Halifax talks on Sunday, when it was decided that the visit should take place "under all circumstances."

CHIEF DUTY

"Mr. Chamberlain regards the planned conversations as a step to-- wards mutual understanding," writes the "Daily Telegraph," which adds: "Lord Halifax's chief duty will be to determine the exact causes of the present unsatisfactory relations between Germany and Britain.”

While doubting if the visit will have concrete results, the journal states that it will at least give both countries a chance to become ac- quainted with the attitude of the other.

CONCILIATORY ATTITUDE The "Daily Mail” also emphasises the conciliatory British attitude, de- claring that Mr. Chamberlain is willing to discuss any colonial sug- gestion advanced by Germany..

The paper asserts, however, that Mr. Chamberlain would like a Ger- man promise to return to the League i of Nations.

Any return of Germany to Geneva, says that paper, would have to in- clude removal of the war guilt clause from the League Covenant and the devising of a new Mandates systemi
