Reg. Clements Of S. Australia

A 15-year-old boy from Peter- Clements, borough (S.A.), Reg. proved the best boy tennis player for his years at the South Austra- lian age championships for · boys and girls from 11 to 16.

McGrath specialises on the dou- ble-handed shot from the backhand, and Bromwich swishes them in from the forehand, but Clements uses both hands from both wings.

thel His volleyed placements are nearest thing to Norman Brookes' placements seen in Adelaide · for years.

AUSTIN'S SPEEDY WIN

GRANT THE “GIANT KILLER”

London, June 17. H. W. AUSTIN entered the lists at Queen's yes-

terday and came through to the last eight in.

the London championship singles without the hint. of a check (writes A Wallis Myers).

STO WIN THE TITLE HE MUST BEAT IN TURN SURFACE, SABIN AND BUDGE, - THREE OF THE AMERICANS WHO, WITH GRANT, SURVIVED YESTERDAY. I AM ASSUMING, OF COURSE, THAT NOTHING" UNTOWARD HAPPENS TO BUDGE" OR SABIN.

Against Shayes, Austin was too fluent on the drive and too decisive on the flat volley to be in any danger. His opponent could not match his ground strokes and was vulnerable in the deep cor- ners. Shayes, as he always does, made spectacular shots off a rising ball, but Austin also struck the rising ball confidently and with much more consistency and finish.

Surface lost a set to his com- patriot and doubles partner, Har- ris, and Sabin was nearly en- gaged in what might have been an anxious third set against Rit- like chie. His experience was that of Parker's the previous day. He put the wraps on” too soon, and Ritchie, coming up much better on the centre court from 2-5 down in the second than off it. Grant, I believe, occu- set, not only caught his man but passed him.
