It should be explained that the is Colony's military contribution used as part payment of the defence of Hong Kong. Thia contribution is strictly limited to a levy of 20 per cent, on the revenues (less cer- tain items) of the Colony.
There has been no increase in the Colony's military contribution as a result of the recent decision to modernise the defences of Hong Kong.
The RM.S. "Empress of Japan" left Yokohama yesterday, leaves Honolulu on Thursday next and is due at Vancouver on May 4.
The P. and O. s.s. “Burdwan" left Shanghai for this Port on Thurs- day and is due here to-morrow at about 5 p.m.
The s.. "Santhia" left Singapore for this Port on the 22nd instant and is due here on Tuesday morn- ing.
