Boston, September 15.
American lawn tennis singles champion- ship tournament which came to an end at the West Side Lawn Tennis Club Stadium last Saturday, proved to be an expensive one for the United States Lawn Tennis Association, as two of the three challenge cups which were up for competition will have to be replaced before the 1937 championships are held. They are the men's and veterans', the women's being the only one which will continue in competition and that| is safe for at least two more seasons.
The new men's trophy will be the eleventh in the history of that championship, while the new veterans' will be the fifth As. it is 11 years since the association has had to buy a national challenge" cup, it will not be necessary to extend any sympathy over the loss of these two trophies, especially as the gate receipts over that period of time have netted a very handsome sum of money.
