LOYALISTS REPORTED TO HAVE SUFFERED HEAVY LOSSES MADRID PRECAUTIONS AGAINST AIR RAIDS
Gibraltar, To-day.
Over 1,000 women with babies in their arms patrolled the streets of San Sebastian yesterday asking the loyalists to surrender and thus save the lives of their babies and themselves, according to the radio station at Tetuan. It is claimed from Seville that the loyalists were defeated five miles from Talavera, losing 500 killed and over 150 wounded. The report adds that the loyalists have lost over 1,500 men in the last week's fighting.

Madrid: The rebel air raids are recurring and are causing the authorities to take extensive measures to meet the danger.
Street lamps have been painted dark blue and air raid shelters are provided at various points, while the underground stations are open all night long. The food shortage is assuming serious proportions, while the British-American Club has been forced to close down, owing to the greatly reduced membership.
St. Jean de Luz: It is understood that the work of the diplo-| matic conference striving to "humanise" the civil war is hamper- ed by the attitude of the Madrid Government, whose representa- Ives are still here but are apparently disavowed by Senor Largo Caballero's new Cabinet. It is reported that Madrid is at pre- sent unwilling to reach an agreement, and the latest suggestions of the diplomatic corps have been met with an emphatic refusal.
