Melbourne, May 13.

ARNEY ROSS has signed a contract to de- fend his welter title against Jack Carroll, the Australian boxer, at Sydney, on December 8. Ac- cording to Mr. Charles Lucas, the fight promoter, Ross will receive £11,250 (Australian), plus £1,250 expenses, with the promoters handling the taxes. Should Carroll win, Ross has agreed to fight a return bout within 90 days.

When an agreement was reached by cable that Ross would go to Australia and stake his title against Carroll on a guarantee of £9,000, it all seemed plain sailing. Charlie Lucas, who staged the twe Carroll-Van Klaveren fights in Sydney, crossed the Pacific to lodge the necessary money and complete the arrangements.

When he reached Chicago, Ross's headquarters, he found that the champion's managers, Messrs. Pian and Winch, had decided that something should be done to protect their man's interests against an opponent realised to be a menace. They knew what Jack had done to Van Klaveren before they agreed to the original terms.

They now decided that if Ross should be beaten in Australia!
