BEST CLASS OF PONY ESSENTIAL FOR WESTCHESTER CUP

Fleet, Street, April 8. THE English international polo team selected to play against the United States for the West- chester Cup at Hurlingham in June are at present practising at Aldershot, where for the past three weeks the ponies have been in the care of captain M. P. Ansell As a whole the ponies look very well, but some of them hardly seem up to inter- national class, and it is to be hoped that some more really good ones will be lent to the team. Otherwise they will not be able to do themselves justice when the big day arrives.

Captain Ansell has some very nice-looking ponies of his own. including one by the German sire Weissdorn, named Fritz, two bred in Argentina, Warrior and Rico, and St. Gaudens, by the 1924 Two Thousand Guineas winner Diophon. Daubeney's Malasmin: West Countryman, who was played in all the oper tournaments in London two years ago by Captain A W. M. S. Other ponies that probably will be played by Mr. Tyrrell-Martin are Colonel T..P. TAKES MORE THAN MONEY TO WIN

Lonon, March 14.

USUALLY, at this time of year, there are stories of the coming "transfer rush." One gets numerous reminders that after midnight. March 16, until the season ends, no more transfers of players within the Football League may be made without the sanction of the Management Com- mittee, who will not permit in any circumstances a player transferred afterwards to take part in a game where promotion or relegation is faintly concerned.

This year, the fact that only a fortnight remains has escaped general notice amid the bother over the fight between the League jand the football pools. Club managements are well aware of it. There may not be a “rush" of transfers. I do not think there will, as regards important and costly players. But there will cer. " tainly be a good deal of business done.

Officials of clubs that happen to be well staffed may justi- fiably chuckle. They sell on a "rising market." How well it pays to go to some trouble in carefully selecting young players from minor clubs, and coaching them in the reserves for two or three seasons, may be seen from the recent transfers in which my former club, Birmingham, have been concerned.
