TRAIN FOR BERLIN

BUT FEAR BRITAIN'S BID

(By Geoffrey Simpson)

London, February 6.

AMERICAN track runners are firm believers gymnasium work as a means for remov- ing the rough edges. We may therefore assume that Glen Cunningham and W. R. Bonthron, star U.S. milers, have started training for the Olym- pic Games now that they have joined a gym- nasium class.

Matt Geis, the athletics coach who brought Bonthron to London to meet 3. E. Lovelock, has joined the pair as supervisor, so it looks pretty clear who the United States representatives will be in the 1.500 metres. Hearing. Geis talk is to be impressed. In fact, I left him last summer feeling that Bonthron was about to tear Lovelock into small pieces.

Instead of which Bonthron was tailed off by the New Zea- lander. This explains why Geis is now saying: "Cunningham for Bonthron must break world record to beat Lovelock in Berlin"

JACK DOYLE BACK IN ENGLAND

SEEKS RETURN BOUT WITH PETERSEN

BUT WILL TAKE ON ANYBODY

London, February 14.

JACK DOYLE has come back again, as he pro- mised he would — - bringing with him his wife, the same old optimism, a few more pounds in weight, and an unquenchable ambition to fight Jack Petersen again and prove to England that he can fight.

For the next two weeks he will be content to prove that he can sing and act, and in this he will be helped by his wife, Judith Allen, the American film actress of Border Scots extraction.

Jack Doyle himself is less of the flamboyant boy he was when he left for America: matured. pipe-smoking, almost sobered by experiences that might have broken s less resilient temperament, he seems to have found himself.

And it is a strange story hel tells about fighting in America. When he arrived in New York he believed he was to be the He protege of Jack Dempsey. discovered that Dempsey knew nothing of the arrangement.

THE CHANGE DID HIM GOOD

Walker's 150th Game

Londor, February 6. Strange how men are moderate players in one team and stars in another. One of the main reasons for West Ham's recent climb, în the Second Division is the fine de- fensive play of Albert Walker, who will shortly make his 160th ap pearance in the senior side.

Walker, a native of Bolton, made his professional debut with South- port, from whom he joined Bolton Wanderers. His stay. at Burnden Park, however, was short, and he was allowed to leave for Barrow. Here Walker played brilliantly, and this attracted West Ham, who have no more popular player, - less it is Brickwall Barrett.
