TWO WITHDRAWALS CAUSE DISAPPOINTMENT

(By "Referee")

MUCH disappointment was caused at the Val-

ley yesterday when the Fourth Submarine Flotilla and Royal Air Force scratched from the Blarney Stone Seven-a-Side Rugby tournament. held under the auspices of the Hong Kong Foot- ball Club, but the three remaining encounters, although slightly drawn out, provided some thrilling play.

The Club "A" side, giving a brilliant display on the very slippery and sluggish surface, severely trounced the East Lancs. by 22 points to 5. while the Rifles just managed to eliminate the

As a result of the two withdrawals the Dorsetshire enter the Second. Round, where they will encounter the Fusilier "B" side. who won a thrilling struggle yesterday against Butterfield and Swire, while the Bank will meet the Fusilier "B." winners of the Army Seven-a-Side tournament.

The Fusilier “A” and the FUSILIER "C"

Club “A” are favoured to reach; the semi-final round, and their clash will probably provide the best Rugby in the tournament, while in the bottom half the Dorsetshire and the Bank are: favoured to reach the Semi- Final.

BRIEF REVIEW OF ANNUAL MEETING

THE

(By "Rapier")

Annual Race Meeting was again featured by mud splashing, but it was a definite suç- cess, despite deplorable weather conditions.

After all the time and attention that had been lavished on the grass track, it was indeed a pity to see it so badly cut up, but that was inevitable. Full credit must be given to the Jockeys who had to race in such terrible conditions, with rain and mud constantly blocking their vision, and it spoke well for their fine spirit to find them carrying on in such a whole-hearted manner. A word of praise is also due to the Official Starter. With the exception of the Sydney Maiden Stakes (Second Section) on the first day, where a few ponies were left standing, I think it can safely be said that practically all the other races were started very satisfactorily.
