The Season's Suits

Mode Elite

THIS is the month when few women can resist the urge

to buy a suit. Well, there are about six different kinds, includ- ing the never-dying classic tailor-made, which is always in favour and always fashionable. the only difference in it this year being that the jacket is rather longer than usual

täc

Then there are other types jacket with cape sleeves: the cape pure and simple: the jacket which fastens round the waist like a blouse and looks like one-not k good choice, this, if you are what our mothers called “a chilly mortal"; and the cape with sleeves-rather a newcomer which will suit only a few people.

Nearly all these are wom with straight skirts, which very occa- sionally are slit A very few of them are being tried out with short trousers--perhaps because the divid

ed skirt showed signs of popularity in Paris this summer. But prac tically all these trousers are being worn with long coats or beneath

frocks rather than with the briefer Jackets.

There is an important point about the new suits this year-that is their tendency to be trimmed with braid. Side seams and hems of " skirts are marked with one or two lines of inch-wide silk braid, al- though for the coat the old-fashion- ed soutache is more popular in the form of frogs and sleeve trimming.

Here is a hint for the girl who will have to make her last year's autuma suit do for this year. A few lines of braid canningly dis- poved across the front and down the outside of the sleeves betreen the elbow and wrist will do mar vels. And if she likes, she can add a belt of braid made on straight lines on a stif foundation with a braid button. fastening.

Beneath your jacket your blouse -in fine wool, satin, or crepe-de- chine -- will follow the lines of a frock. Piped collars, jabots, and cuffs decorate many of the" silk blouse but if you prefer some- thing plain, finish it with a 3in. wide belt of the same material, de- tachable and worn over the skirt. The sleeves are not quite as frivol- ous and elaborate as those on your dress, but they are not far from it. As-You-Like Hats

By the way, your hat can be made to follow the line of last resistance. this season. In other words, it may be fur to match your jacket trin- ming, and need be a mere cap.” The · Russian cap is popular, so is a modi-, fied fez, but so long as your head- gear is rather oblong in shape, shows a good deal of forehead and. some hair at one side, and is a little higher than last season's shapes, you can the milliners generously imply wear very much what you Fike.

Cap. scarf, and glove sets in tweed are good "standbys" for the cooler days, especially if they are in a bright colour."

Don't bewail the dulness of your dark suit and do nothing about it.. It is easy to add bright spots of colour, and inexpensive into the bargain. You can knit vivid thread gloves to go with a woollen scarf and beret in the same shade; you can remove your belt and swathe your middle with a wide one of smooth cloth in a bright colour, covering an old buckle with a scrap of it, and pulling the end through the belt itself so that it falls right-angles, instead of convention-- ally tucking it into a loop. Only for this your jacket must fit close- ly over your hips: Or you can try it on a dark frock and see what a dif- ference it makes.

Experiment with scarlet, and red, and wine colours; do daring things with orange or lovely ecclesiastical purple; cut а dash with green, bright blue, or rasset brown

You will find a little originality "well worth the trouble.
