(By A. WALLIS MYERS)

Bournemouth, May 1. NTICYCLONIC conditions favoured rapid pro- gress in the British hard court champion- ships here to-day, and 28 singles matches-all on the card, that is-were finished an hour be fore tea.

The eight victors in the men's event, of whom six were home-bred, came through almost un- scathed. Only one of them forfeited a set. Among their victims were three South Africans and two New Zealanders, the latter being put out by Perry and Austin.

Yet in spite of this satisfying record for England, the two. surviving oversea competitors, N. G. Farquharson and D. Prenn, revealed tennis of a high class. Both appeared to appreciate the rather difficult Bournemouth conditions and both gained conclu Fsive conquests over tough opponents. Each has a good chance

of reaching the semi-final to-morrow.
