SOCIALISTS' CONTEMPT
The Socialist League, which was ereated to take the place of the In- dependent Labour Party as a propa- gandist organisation, and work out.. schemes for planting Socialism on the country through the medium of the Labour Party, publishes "Pro- blems of the Socialist Transition," by Sir Stafford Cripps, M.P., and others.
This is a collection of pamphlets published separatelyat different times over the past twelve months by Socialist writers.
What Is most striking in the jvolume in the scarcely veiled con- empt on the part of some of the Trade writes. for such bodies as Unions and Co-operative Societies.
For example, according to Mr. G. H. D. Cole, "Co-operation throws to the top useful people who like doing dull, useful jobs in a dull useful way." Co-operation will never be in the Socialist vanguard, yet "it has to be enlisted in the Socialist commissariat."
Pride of place. In the volume is given to Sir Stafford Cripps, on "Democracy-Real or Sham?" Hi contribution lacks the violence of some of his former writings and speeches.
He asserts that "If we could eliminate the personal factor of fear se cunningly played upon by the Capitalist, it would be an easy task to win over the country to Socialism."
