South African Subsidy.
For Italian Lines.
VIGOROUS SPEECH BY SIR ROBERT HORNE
London, To-day.
The first confirmation of the re- port which has astounded British shipping circles, that the South African Government has agreed subsidise Italian lines to the extent of £150,000 yearly, to carry Cape produce to Mediterranean ports., was afforded in a speech made by General Jan Smuts at Johannesburg, yesterday.
General Smuts said that the Government of South Africa were fully committed before the Coalition was formed and asked, "was it worth while breaking up the Coalition for a shipping sub- Ridy?"
Sir Robert Horne, In a speech at Glasgow, yester- day, declared that Britain would never forgo shipping supremacy and the remedy
of subsidies would be applied if only as a last resort.
