H.M.S. Suffolk, of the China Station, carrying on board her sixteen Officers and 787 other ranks of the 1st Battalion The Lincolnshire Regiment arrived, in the Colony from. Shanghai on October 3. The Lincolnshires, one of the oldest regiments in the British Army, are replacing the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, who are leaving for the North on the troopship Neuralia, on November 10. The Argylls were rushed to Shanghai during the Sino- Japanese hostilities. The Suffolk berthed in the Naval Anchorage, and the troops were transported by launches to the Sham Shui Po Camp. The trial of Cheng Kwok-yau, found guilty at the Supreme Court on a charge of procuring the murder of George Fing at Village Road on the night of March 24. last, has entered its fourth stage, H.E. the Governor, in Connell, granting a respite of three months on his execution, which normally would have taken place between October 2 and 9. Meanwhile, a petition for clemency has been drawn up by leading local Chinese residents and circulated. A story is given in the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL.
The Mamak Hockey Tournament, in which 26 teams have entered this season, opened in brillant weather on the afternoon of October 1; three matches being decided St. Andrew's Club, the Police and the Incognitos all proved victorious at the hands of H.M.S. Phoenix, the German "Club and the R.A.S.C. In all, 650 games have to be
decided between October and April next year.
Great enthusiasm is being displayed and the year should prove a great one in the history of local hockey activities. The games are all reported in the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL.
