The Journal of Commerce nounces the death of Mr. William Clibbett Stapledon who, until 1931. wis one of the managers of the Blue Funnel Line (Messrs. Alfred Holt and Co.), and an outstanding figure in the Far Не Eastern trade of the country. passed away at his home in Caldy, had been ill for some months, and Cheshire.

Mr. Stapledon, who was in his 74th year, was a native of the west country, and a son of the late Cap- täin Wm. Stapledon, who for many years commanded Liverpool-owned sailing ships.

On the opening of the Suez Canal, Mr. Stapledon's father was commis sioned by the late Mr. Alfred Holt, founder of the Blue Funnel Line, to proceed, to Port Said and Suez as the agent for the company at those ports With the development of the canal as the ocean highway be tween Europe and the Far East, the Arm of Messrs. Wm. Stapledon eventually took over the agency" not. only for the Blue Funnel Line but also for all the leading, steamship! companies using the canal.
