Customs Officers Take No Part in Quest

Illegal functioning by detectives and constables of the Public Safety Bureau occurred on. Thursday and Friday last on board the 1-C.S. Loongwo, a British ship, searching for opium without reference to the

apparently usarping the functions of the Customs, whose river police did not appear at all.

Detectives of the Public Safety Bureau at noon on Thursday went on board the ship, and searched the hold for oplum. Officers of the ship did not learn of this unauthorised search until members of the Cus toms search party informed them that it had taken place. Then an examination of the hold showed that floor boards had been removed and were strewn around.
