Preparatory to the change in the method of giving helm orders under the Merchant Shipping (Safety and Load Lines Conventions) Bill, several devices are being placed on the market with the object of reduc- ing any possible mistakes as the result of wrong Interpretation of orders.
A very interesting device was on view at the rooms of the Liverpool Underwriters' Associa
tion, which is claimed to rule out the human element in the carrying out of helm orders, and the danger of putting the wheel in the wrong direction.
