been costing him so much a week all the time. The odds, of course, are rather heavy on the rich man. But there are very few rich men now and the odds against the poor man's chance for the Derby are not as long as they were in the past.
Superstition, as in all other branches-of sport, plays a large part in every Derby. I can recall one, good story of a Derby favourite becoming embroiled in the clutches of superstition.
Neil Gow, which was hot favourite for the Derby, was trained at Exning at the home of the late Lord Durham. It was the big noise of the English turf, but there was. also. another noise which at dawn every morning annoyed Lord Durham. It came from the big colony of rooks that every year car- ried out their domestic obligations in the tall elms, around Harraton House and the training establish- ment. At last Lord Durham could endure the discord no longer, and he ordered the ruthless shooting of the rooks.
In vain did the trainer plead for them, and finally he threw out this. dark warning:
"You're making a mistake, my Hord. If you shoot the rocks it will mean bad luck for certain." The execution, however, was carried out. On the Saturday before the Derby Neil Gow did his last important gallop. Later in the day he war found to have thrown out a curb, which is an enlargement below the point of the hock, due to strain. He was sent to the post at Epsom, but his chances had been dimmed He could do. no better than finish fourth. The rooks had had their revenge!
Yours, etc,
