A DERBY TRAGEDY
To win the Derby is the ambition of every owner. Many are the disappointments, and few the rewards.
The greatest Derby tragedy, I can remember is the case of Flair, the famous Billy of Sir Daniel Coopers In 1905, as'a two-year- old, she was in a class by herself. She was in the same stable as Spearmint, and was so Incomparably better that Gilpin determined to reserve Spearmint for the Grand Prix, and not to run him in the Derby.
When in 1906 Flair ran away with the Thousand Guineas, the Derby seemed the greatest of all certainties. Then the filly went | lame, sudeda
