All things have their chance with fashion, and it looks as if the once absurd or vulgar muffer of wool has now come into its own. Perhaps the discovery by the smartest people of such excellent things as coffee. stalls and sausage-and-mashed-to which, ! understand, the middle-class virtues of high teas re now being added-have had their induence in the new patronage of the muffler. The muffler is fouitd to be comfortable and becoming, so why not smart as well? Now I see in some of the most exclusive and. expensive shops in London neck coverings which remind me forcibly,

more than a casual interest in things around them, they ought to have some valuable opinions on the subject: More than that, feminine experience should be of value to the architect of the modern house, whe must many a time be in doubt as to where the larder ought to go and how many paces should divide the sink from the kitchen cupboard, the service hatch from the sideboard.

Almost every woman I know bas |a slight grievance against the plan- ning of her own house. A new career for girls.

Still, there is the question of decoration. Undoubtedly there is room for a big campaign for batter furnishing fa modern homes. I do not mean that there is much wrong with the actual furniture made by present-day craftsmen. But there is something very unhappy about ita relationship to carpets, walls, cur- tains and so forth in the average modern house. No wonder artistic girls talk about giving advice when they see the hors d'œuvres of Hne and colour that collects Itself to- gether in dozens of drawing-rooms and living-rooms.
